Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Lead Web Developer to join the Protein Families team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). You will be responsible for co-ordinating the activities of a small team of dedicated developers that maintain the different web interfaces of the databases produced by the team. One of the key roles of the project will be the development of a new interface to the Protein Families’ databases, Pfam and InterPro. These well-established resources are now co-located at EMBL-EBI, providing an opportunity for consolidating their different, yet overlapping, activities. Other projects will involve development and maintenance of the EBI metagenomics and Rfam websites. You will work closely with both the curation and production software co-coordinators, to ensure timely delivery of new features and that the data are intuitive to navigate by the scientific community.
Reporting to the Protein Families Team Leader, Rob Finn you will:
- Lead and participate in the design and implementation of intuitive web interfaces
- Develop new JavaScript based data visualisation tools for complex and/or large data
- Ensure continued scalability and functionality of existing web features
- Evaluate new web technologies and communicate innovative ideas
- Seek and respond to user experience testing and user requests
- Work with the EMBL-EBI web team to ensure institute standards compliance
- Liaise with senior members of the Protein Families team to ensure co-ordination of activities
EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. Qualifications and Experience
You should have a qualification in a biological, computational or related scientific discipline (ideally MSc or PhD). In exceptional circumstances other qualifications, or demonstrable relevant working experience, would be considered.
Required experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in web application software development
- Deployment of dynamic visualization of large datasets via a web client in a production environment
- Experience using version control as part of a group project (e.g. subversion/git)
- Acquaintance with molecular biology and/or bioinformatics
- Ability to motivate and lead a team, as well as being a team player
- Experience with web-based graphics (HTML5 Canvas, SVG, D3) is essential
- Experience using web frameworks, such as Catalyst, Django, and Ruby on Rails
- Experience with JavaScript programming, particularly jQuery and AJAX
- Unix/Linux excellent working knowledge
- Web server knowledge, Apache, Lighttpd and/or similar
- Experience with Perl/Java, MySQL/Oracle, CSS, HTML5
- Experience with Agile development techniques
- Good written and verbal communication skills for communicating with peers and non-technical users
- Willingness to learn new skills as the demands of the project evolve
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic and able
Desirable experience:
- Experience working closely with scientists in a pure research environment
- Experience writing and maintaining unit and/or acceptance tests (e.g. JUnit, Selenium)
- A good knowledge of web security approaches
