Section Manager - Neuroscience Research

JOB DESCRIPTION

Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest challenges facing 21st century science. In the frame of the 10-year Human Brain Project, the Center for Brain Simulation will simulate the human brain, develop brain-inspired computing technologies, map brain diseases, perform targeted mapping of the mouse and human brain, develop Information and and Communications Technology (ICT) platforms.

The Center for Brain Simulation is creating an informatics platform for large-scale neuroscience data integration, analysis, modeling and simulation to serve the scientific community. The Section Manager for Brain Atlasing brings leadership and scientific expertise to an important new effort in the Neuroinformatics Division to spatially and semantically organize large amounts of data, models and literature in navigable 3D brain atlases.

Duties:

  • Lead, build and manage activities related to the mission of brain atlasing 
  • Lead the Brain Atlasing team comprised of data atlasing researchers and engineers
  • Coordinate, implement and manage third-party projects in data atlasing
  • Define the scientific and technical roadmap of the data atlasing section in accordance to the project’s and division’s objectives and roadmaps
  • Coordinate, devise and oversee scientific and technical implementation of the data atlasing roadmap and related activities
  • Participate in the architecting and implementation of data atlasing software components
  • Represent data atlasing efforts in technical and scientific contexts
  • Support other sections on the topic of data atlasing and adoption of data atlasing technology
  • Help organize project plans, identify key milestones and objectives, prepare for external scientific review and assist in identifying and managing key technology and collaborative partnerships.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential skills:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math or similar is required
  • Good team player and fluent in both spoken and written English
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral
  • Proven ability to work both independently and in team-based environments
  • 3 to 5 years experience in management of scientific teams
  • Experience in building and working with neuroscience data registration into a Brain Atlas.
  • Good experience in programming (Python, C/C++)
  • Relational Database experience
  • Experience in coordinating local and remote research and development across a diverse team

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of current brain atlasing initiatives (Allen Brain Atlas, Human Connectome Project, etc)

  • Knowledge of existing atlasing tools (eg. waxholm, whole brain catalog)

  • Knowledge of neuroinformatic standards (eg incf, NIF)

  • Working experience with experimentalists and/or modelers

  • Image processing would be a plus
