Job Description 

We are currently looking to recruit a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Civil, Structures and Offshore Engineering team (CSO) in Rijswijk, Netherlands to provide engineering expertise and technical assurance for onshore and marine developments and facilities.

In a larger context, CSO is part of Project and Engineering Services (PTE) organization and its main aim is to create value in the Upstream and Downstream Businesses through innovation and the application of know-how, technology and engineering capability.

The CSO team in Rijswijk comprises more than 55 engineers and other technical professionals covering all civil and structural aspects relating to our oil and gas projects and is organized into three main skill-based teams: civil engineering, offshore structures and metocean. The Civil engineering team (approx 30 persons) is responsible for a diverse portfolio of work and is itself managed in four resource groups. Team members are mostly expected to develop competences in a range of the above subject matter areas, although the team also includes some deeper specialists, including geotechnical engineers, offloading systems specialists and specialist in advanced structural analysis. Some of our specialists are global industry experts in their fields.

As part of the Projects & Technology (P&T) organisation the CSO engineering team in Rijswijk, you will deliver competitive services and projects for our customers in the mainly within the EMEA region. You will also be a leader in the CSO contribution to performance improvements within Shell such as R&D, standardization of designs, simplification of processes and internal and external knowledge sharing.

The team you will be part of will carry out and coordinate geotechnical engineering activities for the purpose of concept evaluation, concept definition (FEED), detailed design, construction and asset integrity. You will support customers with technical advice, best Shell and Industry practices and competitive global standards to enable top quartile operating performance.

Responsibilities:

As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will take a senior role in a team of engineers to provide geotechnical engineering expertise and technical assurance for onshore and offshore structures and facilities.

In detail, this will involve:

  • Enabling Projects and Technology (P&T) to deliver onshore and offshore development projects by executing project activities, including conceptual, FEED Design and detailed Design, Construction and Installation.
  • Perform Quality Assurance and Control reviews to ensure the technical integrity, constructability, functionality and reliability of designs.
  • Provide input to the development of project execution contracting strategies that complement designs, construction and operating methods.
  • Manage outsourced work to Engineering Consultants and Contractors.
  • Provide CSO Engineering technical input to P&T business development groups in the Identification, Assessment & Selection of new business opportunities, sustaining the group as the recognised entry point for such service.
  • Identify new technology to overcome new business challenges; working with R&D Group to formulate project proposals, defining scope of work and participating in development of technical solutions.
  • Leading the update of Standards, Tools and Guidelines within own area of expertise.

As part of your role, you will, you will also have less experienced professionals and junior engineers working with you and for whom you will act as a coach.

Requirements:

To be successful in your role, you will need:

  • MSc/BSc in a technical discipline (Civil engineering), coupled with genuine and continuous interest in technology.
  • Higher-level degree or professional qualification.
  • Significant relevant experience in geotechnical, Civil engineering with exposure to either Civil or Oil and Gas industry including international work.
  • Experience in projects consistent with the status of a recognized subject matter expert in the geotechnical engineering and foundation design aspects preferably of both onshore facilities and fixed/floating offshore structures.
  • Experience of working within the opportunity realisation process, effective collaboration in multi-discipline teams is an added value.
  • Excellent communications skills (both verbal and written) to effectively interact with both internal and external customers. Should actively participate in industry meetings to keep abreast of new developments and trends.

You will be a self-starter, working systematically without close supervision, capable of prioritizing tasks, adapting to new or changing circumstances and be a highly effective team player. You will be able to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
