Purpose of the Job
To undertake engineering associated with the design and development of industrial steam turbines. To carry out work on steam turbines including the turbine modules, auxiliary systems, controls and instrumentation
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- The role holder will be responsible for estimating task requirements, task planning, and execution to an agreed timescale;
- The role holder will need to instruct and support other team members within the engineering team;
- Undertake work associated with the mechanical design of all parts of industrial steam turbines;
- Design of turbine module and auxiliary systems for industrial steam turbines;
- Working with other engineers involved in the machine’s development. The job includes liaison with other parts of Alstom and with external organisations and suppliers around the world.
Key competencies for this role are:
- Design of rotating and stationary parts of steam turbines, Examples - Casings, Rotors, Blade carriers, Pedestals, Valves pipe work and Bed frames;
- Design of steam turbine auxiliary systems, including oil, gland steam, drains, hydraulics, controls and protection.
Qualifications
Educational Requirements:
- Mechanical Engineering Degree. Chartered Engineer or working towards becoming Chartered.
Experience
- Experience of the mechanical design of Steam or Gas turbines, in particular in the Geothermal Power sector and/or working within the Steam or Gas turbine industry;
- Proven experience covering the skills/competencies below:
- Specific relevant software experience for use in generation of drawings, layouts and 3D models (CATIA V5 preferred) would be an advantage although not a necessity;
- Design of rotating machines;
- Stressing of rotating and stationary parts;
- Design of components under creep conditions;
- Auxiliary system design.
- Experience in the mechanical design of steam or gas turbines, in particular:
- 3D CAD modelling of rotating and static components;
- A basic understanding of steam turbine technology;
- Mechanical and Thermal stress analysis;
- Controls and instrumentation.
Individuals should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, able to work effectively as part of a team, creative and a good communicator and builder of networks.
Flexibility to travel to other locations in the ALSTOM network and to customer premises for short periods at short notice is required.
