The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Lead Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5MW average power proton beam, driving the world's most powerful neutron source. The Accelerator Integration Group is responsible for the overall engineering design of the accelerator, and the integration of the large number of technical components into a coherent facility.
Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be a Lead Engineer, an engineering-physicist, responsible for overseeing the design and integration of a significant section of ESS's linear accelerator. This includes the authoring of the technical requirements for this section of the accelerator, monitoring of the development of the principle technical systems, and ensuring that these complex components work well together.
The successful candidate will join a team of three or four other Lead Engineers. The day to day work in this role includes writing the technical requirements that dictate and document the overarching design of the machine. In addition, it will be necessary to communicate with the many technical experts within Accelerator Division, and to negotiate technical issues between the different groups.
Qualifications
- PhD in Accelerator Physics, Engineering, or a related field;
- Experience in the operation of particle accelerators is a significant advantage;
- Experience of working in an international environment is essential;
- Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
This position requires a breadth of knowledge across multiple accelerator systems, and the ability to acquire new skills and knowledge in order to make successful decisions. Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
