Your tasks:
RWE Supply & Trading is a leading commodity trading company. We are seeking to improve our understanding in the renewables sector. Therefore we are looking for a renewables modeller to analyse information on wind power and photovoltaic generation and provide quantitative forecasts. You should have a strong background in weather and energy-related modelling. You will collect and analyse the relevant information, build models, produce and review quantitative information, and provide and explain the proprietary data to a varied customer base.
The role is currently based on our state-of-the-art trading floor in Essen. Should we find an excellent fit for the role, there may be the opportunity to work from other locations, particularly in our offices in England or Switzerland. Areas of responsibility will include:
- developing and improving forecasts for renewable energy generation on different timescales and with variable spatial resolution (from the individual wind park level to the Germany-wide level)
- identifying and collecting data relevant to quantitative renewable energy forecasting
- building and further developing models for renewable generation
- reviewing results and accuracy levels
- liaising with external data providers and other stakeholders within RWE Supply & Trading and sister companies
- contributing to day-to-day trading decisions and asset optimisation
- providing a quantitative view on renewable energy
- communicating results promptly and efficiently to a variety of customers internally and within the RWE Group
- contributing to the various forecasting processes conducted by the Weather team
Your profile:
- university degree in meteorology, physics, atmospheric science, mathematics, engineering or related sciences
- significant expertise in modelling wind and PV generation, ideally with considerable modelling experience
- familiarity with numerical weather models and their output (e.g. GFS, WRF etc.), as well as the characteristics of wind turbines and photovoltaic installations
- in-depth experience of programming, e.g. Java, Matlab, Pascal, R etc.
- written and spoken English proficiency
- ability to absorb large amounts of information and extract relevant conclusions
- ability to collaborate within an immediate interdisciplinary team with weather forecasters, programmers and market analysts and a wider team of traders and support functions
- high level of self-motivation and a willingness to further improve skills independently
