Design and Radioactive Discharge Specialist

EDF Group

Flexible, United Kingdom

Job description

EDF Energy is a core part of the EDF Group and is one of the largest energy companies in Europe with key business operations in France, the UK, Germany and Italy. In the UK we have approximately 15,000 employees. We are the UK’s leading generator and supplier of low carbon energy. We produce about one-fifth of the nation’s electricity from our nuclear, coal and gas power stations, wind farms, and combined heat and power plants. We have a focus on safe, dependable energy generation and an ethos of service excellence. We intend to play a leading role in new nuclear build in the UK and secure a ‘bright’ future for the combined business and its employees.

EDF Energy is at the heart of the UK’s new nuclear build programme. The nuclear power stations we plan to build will be the first in a new generation. So a career in this area is a truly unique opportunity – an opportunity to be at the forefront of new nuclear, and to enjoy a long and fruitful career helping us deliver the first nuclear power stations in the UK for twenty years. The first station to be built would be Hinkley Point C, Somerset, sited next to Hinkley Point A and B stations. This will be followed by two new reactors at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Together these will form one of the biggest construction projects in Europe and they offer the chance to gain invaluable experience working with the latest reactor technology. Throughout the initial development and construction phase, opportunities will focus on project managers, electrical, mechanical, control & instrumentation engineers and specialists. In the longer term, we also want to hear from nuclear operational experts, security professionals (for both information and nuclear security), quality assurance, quality control and safety case professionals as well as highly skilled procurement experts.

As part of Environment Team within NNB GenCo, this position, reporting to the Environmental Technical Manager, will provide design and procurement advice to support compliance with the environmental permit for the disposal of radioactive waste.  This role will grow as the organisation and project develops supporting the site, construction, commissioning and operations.  This position will be responsible for producing company documents and provision of advice to other groups in the organisation and contractors on ensuring the application of Best Available Techniques is demonstrated in compliance with the conditions of the environmental permit.

In addition the role will support the preparation, implementation and surveillance of environment specific aspects related to the development of new nuclear power station at Sizewell in Suffolk, including the preparation, review and assessment of environmental documents supporting NNB GenCo’s application for operational environmental permit to dispose of radioactive waste and effluents.

Profile sought

EDF’s ambition is to construct and operate a fleet of new nuclear plants in UK, including those at Hinkley Point in Somerset and Sizewell in Suffolk (the UK EPR Project).

The company needs to demonstrate that the organisation, design and management arrangements to support the delivery of this project are suitable and sufficient to ensure the safe and compliant management of its activities.

The Environment Team, working closely with other teams across the business, has the responsibility to develop, co-ordinate and deliver the necessary environmental permit applications to enable the construction, operational and, ultimately, the decommissioning of the new nuclear power stations.  All of this has to be achieved within the strict regulatory framework and alongside our integrated management system.  These management arrangements will enable NNB GenCo to demonstrate compliance and best practice in environmental performance at each appropriate stage of the project.  In addition, the Environment Team provides environmental expertise for the assessment of design specifications, contract documentation and to support activities on company sites.

NNB GenCo is working in close collaboration with the engineering and project management teams of EDF in France and the UK. This role will be actively engaged in working within the broader EDF family.

  • Excellent communication/interpersonal and influencing skills notably throughout various levels of the organisation and externally with other stakeholders.
