Engineering Officer, Vienna

Duties and responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Chief, Engineering and Development Section, International Monitoring Systems Division, to:

  • Identify, plan and execute projects and provide engineering solutions in support of the installation, testing, operation and maintenance of the International Monitoring System (IMS). This includes data acquisition, communications technology, computer networking applications, interface issues, data security/authentication, state-of-health monitoring, configuration management, incidents and problems management;
  • Formulate field solutions for design, repair, upgrade and integration of stations into the IMS and evaluate the performance of IMS networks and stations. Test, troubleshoot, solve problems, report and liaise with station operators and equipment providers;
  • Formulate terms of reference for hardware/software development and testing as well as project management for related contracts;
  • Support IMS training activities including technical training programmes as well as specific equipment training;
  • Contribute to the coordination with diplomatic missions and technical organizations on arrangements for the establishment and operation of facilities of the IMS and support the Chief in the strategic planning of the work programme;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Advanced university degree in applied physics, geophysics, electrical or computer engineering or a related field;
  2. At least seven years relevant working experience in the field of geophysical data acquisition systems including an excellent knowledge of computer networking principles, communications technology, instrument responses and data exchange formats and protocols. Experience in computer-based systems preferably UNIX-based including programming languages, data processing tools, Relational Databases and TCP/IP networking concepts preferably part of which should have been in an international environment;
  3. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Working knowledge of one of the other official languages of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission is an asset.

Remuneration/Contract: CTBTO offers an attractive remuneration package with competitive pay and benefits. The level of pay for internationally recruited staff is set within scales comparable to United Nations salaries. The indicative annual net base for this particular post includes a starting tax free salary of US$ 67,611 (single rate) and US$ 72,605 (dependency rate), plus a variable Post Adjustment which stands at 55,10% for Vienna, Austria (at the time of publication). The post adjustment is reviewed from time in line with the provisions that apply to staff in other comparable International Organizations.

Additional benefits attached to the post include, where applicable, dependency allowance, education grant, rental subsidy, six weeks annual leave and home leave travel every two years. The salary offered is subject to deductions of contributions to the CTBTO Provident Fund and Health Insurance Scheme.
