Network Coordinator - Maths Foresees Network
Part time, 50% full time equivalent; fixed term for 3 years

The Maths Foresees Network is an international network of academics and stakeholders, with the aim of improving multi-scale predication for mitigating severe environmental events (flooding coastal erosion coupled to severe weather prediction). As the network coordinator you will support the management team in the running of the network.
Educated to PhD level in a scientific discipline relevant to the network (e.g., geophysical fluid dynamics, statistics, multi-scale modelling, numerical modelling, weather prediction, oceanography and meteorology, granular flows, coastal engineering, urban pollution), you will organise the day-to-day operations of the network, facilitate communication within the network, organise conferences and workshops, coordinate feasibility and outreach projects, produce information material including a network newsletter, maintain the network web pages, and drive the network's social media strategy. In addition, you are expected to participate in a feasibility and outreach project.
It is expected that you make (regular) visits to management team members in London and Edinburgh.

Job Description
Responsible to: Head of School
Reports to: Professor Onno Bokhove
Main duties and responsibilities
- Support the principal investigator (Prof. Onno Bokhove, PI, Leeds), co- investigator (Prof. Gareth Pender, CI, Heriott-Watt) and the members of the steering committee (Profs. Gavin Esler and Jacques Vanneste, and Dr. Colin Cotter, and a stakeholder) in the running of the network
- Work with the PI to monitor and manage the network budget, provide regular reports to the PI and prepare financial reports to the steering committee
- Be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the network, for example by keeping the membership lists up-to-date, and coordinating network activities
- Be available on a regular basis to respond to queries and act as a first point of contact for the network
- Be responsible for three large conferences, three maths-with-industry workshops and a number of smaller workshops and deliver logistics for travel in connection with network activities
- Organise and manage Steering Committee and Stakeholder Advisory Board meetings, by preparing the agenda, arranging dates and locations, preparing the minutes of meetings and monitoring the implementation of decisions taken at meetings
- Liaise with stakeholders and the Stakeholder Advisory Board to ensure that stakeholder concerns are brought to the attention of the PI, CI and steering committee, and that network outputs are communicated to stakeholders efficiently
- Coordinate the four outreach projects of the network, for example by matching requests for talks in schools to the most appropriate network members

- Produce information material to publicise the network and to communicate the network's scientific aims and results, both within and outside the network. This includes production of a periodic network newsletter

- Maintain and develop the network web site, with an emphasis on presenting the network research and activities in a manner that is accessible to an informed layman
- Coordinate the network's social media strategy

Person Specification
Essential
- Educated to PhD level in a scientific discipline relevant to the network (e.g., geophysical fluid dynamics, statistics, multi-scale modelling, numerical modelling, weather prediction, oceanography and meteorology, granular flows, coastal engineering, urban pollution)
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate scientific results to different audiences
- Experienced user of office software including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experienced user of online communication systems, including email and the internet
- Experience in the active use of social media
- Proven organisational and interpersonal skills; good attention to detail and accuracy
- Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to be pro-active, to work on your own initiative, and to manage projects to tight deadlines when under pressure
- Willingness to be flexible in your working patterns to meet the needs of the project
- Willingness to participate in a feasibility and outreach project of the network
Desirable
- A demonstrable previous interest in the applied mathematics involved in network (e.g., geophysical fluid dynamics, statistics, multi-scale modelling, numerical modelling, weather prediction, oceanography and meteorology, granular flows, coastal engineering, urban pollution)
- Proven skills in supporting committees and working groups
- Experience in coordinating research networks
- Experience with the LaTeX typesetting system
- Experience in organising workshops and/or conferences
- Experience in science communication
- Experience, scientific and otherwise, to participate in a feasibility and outreach project of the network
