Policy & Advocacy Manager, The Netherlands

ONE is a global campaign and advocacy organization backed by over six million people from around the world and every walk of life that are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for the promises made to the poorest, and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid and trade reform. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency so these resources can be effectively deployed. Position Summary

The Policy & Advocacy Manager will provide lead on policy analysis and writing on key development policy issues in the Netherlands. This role will also support the implementation of our advocacy strategy in this market, working closely with government officials, NGOs and other decision makers and opinion formers. The ideal candidate will possess excellent knowledge of global development policy issues and Africa, as well as demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the political scene and development debates in the Netherlands. They must be a great team player and self-starter with excellent communications skills and analytical ability. The Policy & Advocacy Manager will be based in our Brussels or London office and will report to the Europe Communications Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferably in economics or a development-related field
  • Five years’ work experience in a policy, advocacy and/or government role
  • Excellent spoken and written Dutch and English communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the development and political environment in the Netherlands with significant contacts
  • Excellent research, writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent presentation skills, with experience in presenting to senior staff and external audiences
  • Ability to synthesize policy documents, identifying relevant key points and facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audiences in a concise way
  • Demonstrable understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work and knowledge of how policy change can be achieved through effective advocacy
  • Ability to work as part of a global team and in a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with competing priorities and workloads
  • Ability to multi-task with good organisational skills
  • A commitment to ONE’s mission and policy priorities
  • Ability to consistently apply good judgment and make good and responsible decisions

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage ONE’s advocacy and policy work in the Netherlands, working closely with the European Leadership Team and other key staff to develop and execute the strategy for engagement in this market
  • Keep up with the political and policy debates on general issues and development matters in the Netherlands and provide relevant teams across the organisation with regular updates and guidance for further activities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with political contacts and other key partners
  • Draft briefings, talking points and other materials for the use of senior ONE staff and principals and for colleagues working on relevant projects and campaigns
  • Prepare ONE’s positions on key areas of the EU’s development policy and contribute to development of new and emerging policy areas within the Global Policy Team
  • Read and digest relevant policy reports and other documents and produce time-sensitive briefings as well as prepare blog posts for the ONE website
  • Work closely with campaigns, marketing and media staff across the organisation, in the development of campaigning, creative and media materials and products
  • Work with relevant teams across the organisation, to ensure efficient communication, early alerts and coordinated work and to ensure advocacy guidance is fed to relevant colleagues
  • Contribute to ONE’s Netherlands and international reports, by providing Dutch specific analysis, writing parts of the report and coordinating the production process for the Netherlands
  • Represent ONE at meetings and conferences on relevant policy topics, as needed
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or the designee
