The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) represents over 80,000 cardiology professionals, principally from across Europe and the Mediterranean basin, but also from the rest of the world.

The ESC provides an array of scientific and educational activities, such as the production and continuous updating of Clinical Practice Guidelines, the organisation of educational courses and initiatives, pan-European surveys on specific disease areas. It also organises the ESC Congress, the largest medical meeting in Europe.

The ESC is also proud to hold, in conjunction with its constituent bodies, subspecialty congresses, which are becoming increasingly popular within the profession.

The ESC also edits and publishes 9 of the world's leading journals on cardiology.

The ESC is looking for a talented Head of Advocacy and Media Relations.

As we are a not for profit organisation, ideally we are looking for candidates with extensive experience within this field. However we are able to consider applications of those with private sector experience as long as CVs demonstrate a high level of advocacy and media relations skills and practice.

Position description:

  • The Head of Advocacy and Media Relations has the responsibility to lead and manage the ESC’s Advocacy and Media Relations activities;
  • The Head of Advocacy and Media Relations will implement and oversee strategic, broad-based advocacy programs related to specific priority issues;
  • He/she will spearhead the ESC’s efforts to advance the policy agenda by planning and implementing advocacy and awareness campaigns, analysing and drafting policy proposals, and lobbying policymakers;
  • He/she will cultivate and manage relationships with a broad range of media, monitor and analyse stakeholders’ perceptions and media attitudes.

Main responsibilities:

  • Guarantee that ESC programs with advocacy potential are widely and professionally communicated to the right target audiences;
  • Ensure that cardiovascular diseases are addressed in policies in priority areas selected by ESC leadership;
  • Guarantee that ESC expertise is taken into account in the drafting of EU policies likely to help reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases;
  • Contribute to profiling the ESC as the reference in cardiology for relevant stakeholders such as EU institutions, governments, policy makers, regulatory authorities, medical organisations, sister organisations, medical press, lay press, and general public;
  • Develop a good understanding of both EU and ESC agenda as to identify areas of collaboration;
  • Develop an effective information network to relay information from relevant stakeholders to ESC leadership;
  • Actively engage in translating ESC Board strategic priorities into viable and realistic objectives and lobbying actions.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in advocacy, public affairs, communications roles that involve working with NGOs or non-profit organisations;
  • A relevant academic background e.g. Master’s degree is required;
  • Excellent English speaking and writing skills;
  • Maturity, professionalism, excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to exercise diplomacy are critical;
  • Good analytical, networking and facilitation skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations, issues management and external communications;
  • Excellent analytic and communication skills; ability to synthesize complex issues and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences;
  • Exceptional initiative, vision and ability to develop and implement short- and long-term integrated advocacy strategies;
  • Good people management skills;
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse staff including remote teams, and volunteers;
  • IT-skills: advanced use of MS Office;
  • Ability to travel frequently in Europe.
