The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an RF Engineer.

Description of directorate/division

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world's most powerful neutron source.

The RF group is responsible for the design of the RF systems for the ESS accelerator. The RF systems will provide over 120 MW of peak RF power, supplied by over 150 RF stations and include high power RF amplifiers such as klystrons, tetrodes, IOTs and associated auxiliary systems, LLRF, interlock, distribution and reference line systems.

Each high power amplifier requires one or more stages of pre-amplicication ranging from a few W to several tens of kW.

Description of main responsibilities

The main responsibility will be to take the lead on the design, specification and procurement of solid state amplifiers. You will also be required to assist in the design, specification, procurement and installations of the ESS RF systems with a particular emphasis on:

  • Solid State Amplifiers;
  • RF system design;
  • Low and medium power RF system design, component identification and procurement;
  • High and lower power RF testing of systems and components;
  • Repair, upgrade and maintenance following installation;
  • Working with ESS In-kind contracts;
  • Supervision of contractors, partners and suppliers;
  • Assistance and supervision of installation and commissioning effort.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor, Master's or equivalent degree in electronics, physics or a relevant engineering discipline;
  • Experience of RF or microwave systems is an advantage;
  • Experience of RF or microwave measurements is an advantage;
  • Some project, contract or supplier management is an advantage;
  • Experience of working in an accelerator background is an advantage;
  • Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
